The big dig
1. A slip in the the Manawatu Gorge buried the highway and spilled into the Manawatu river. It was the biggest slip in New Zealand history.

2.In October Torrential rain sent even more debris crashing down 20,000 cubic metres of it.

    3. Diggers were used to dump rocks in big trucks but as they worked
more rock and earth slid down.

   4. The road couldn’t be reopened until the hillside was hard enough.

   5. The team cut down the trees and bushes at the top of the hill.

   6. It was time to bring in a bandit the bandit  was a grunty bulldozer

7.  It was days before Christmas and everyone was still at work they used a 20 tonne digger to scoop up great masses of rock and earth.

8. In early 2012  public was told the highway would remain closed until the middle of the year.

9.The Manawatu Gorge road was reopened to traffic in August 2012.
